This work, presented at the 2020 MMCA Asia Project Exhibition, explores the increasingly blurred boundaries of queerness and gender through the lens of shamanism. The project borrows the title The Old and Wrong Way of Seeing Things (2018-2020)—a phrase historically used by Westerners to dismiss shamanism, a spiritual practice in North Asia that they disparagingly referred to as black faith. The piece examines binary concepts such as good and evil, heaven and hell, cause and effect, and subject and object—fundamental to Western religious traditions that emphasize separation—contrasting these with the ritualistic practices and roles of Korean shamanic traditions.

Focusing on the performative aspects of shamanic rituals, the work reinterprets themes of queerness, gender, and even transhuman and posthuman identities through the aesthetic language of a K-pop music video. This fusion of shamanism and popular culture constructs a narrative that challenges conventional notions of identity and spirituality.
