Dew Kim explores the processes through which the body is rewritten at the point where religion, queerness, and the system of regulations collide. Conceiving the body not as a fixed entity but as a ritual site where belief, resistance, and transformation intersect, Kim has been carrying out a boundary-crossing practice that spans sculpture, video, and performance for many years now. Notably, through performative acts such as “becoming an idol/a shaman,” the artist traces the ways in which the body is mythologized and regulated, while borrowing BDSM aesthetics to visualize the subversive tensions embedded in dominance and submission. With narratives of bodies that break down and regenerate on theatrical stages interwoven with popular culture and spiritual symbolism, Kim explores new modes of being and creation that transcend pain.
Dew Kim's site-specific installation The Stage - After God (2026), unfolds across the MOCA and the abandoned Busan Nam High School. Divided in three acts, the work connects these locations into a single pilgrimage. The installation explores how marginalised bodies bear the costs of blind faith, dogmatic idolatry and desire, and what remains when objects of worship have vanished and no clear point of orientation is left. Rather than proposing direct answers, Kim guides the audience through that absence physically, passing from the sacrifice of an offering, through an empty center, to the formation of a new order.
Act 1: The Stage of Blood: The Aesthetics of Sacrifice starts at MoCA. An altar-like stage carries a cross-shaped microphone stand; and is adorned with latex bas-reliefs holding the marginalised bodies of queer and shamanic figures. As a pipe organ exhales, the latex surface gets compressed, exposing these fossil-like silhouettes. The emptiness and suspension surrounding this spectacle of ritual tension suggests how this violence continues to reverberate throughout society. Sacrifice is still omnipresent, though quieter, more subtle and woven into the everyday gestures of a society that still relies on the kneeling of some to confirm the power of others. The vertical structure and sound of the pipe organ contrast with the narrative of the compressed bodies, visually emphasizing the concept of the scapegoat.
