Seoul-based multidisciplinary artist Dew Kim (b. 1985) centres his practice on defying categorisation,
negotiating between the boundaries of pleasure and pain, sacred and erotic, primordial and
technologically-mediated. Best known for his sculptures which he develops using metalwork, glass, and
prosthetic structures, a core preoccupation for the artist is the sensorial nature of the body. By combining
both high and low cultural references—religion, K-pop, and folk shamanism— Kim’s visual vocabulary deals
with the generation of desire and affect, engaging with queerness as a means of extending possibilities
beyond binaries. In his works, bodies appear abstracted, fragmented, cyborgic, and carnal, pointing
towards the broader potential of post-human, mutable bodies in the future.
