Dew Kim’s interactive installation employs fantastical religious imagery and apocalyptic aesthetics to reinterpret the K-pop concept of the “ending fairy pose.” At this climactic moment, fans undergo a process of cathexis, admiring the idols as they overcome the shortness of breath caused by intense choreography. When the idols make eye contact with the camera and assume divine expressions and poses, fans invest an excess of affective capital in them, regarding the idols as ultimate objects of desire. Kim sees this as operating in a manner similar to the way devotees worship religious icons.
Many masters of the Western art canon have depicted the Ascension and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Renaissance works on these subjects glorify and exalt Christ while also presenting him as a sign of the Apocalypse, an omnipotent and all-encompassing Other who demands faithful reverence while simultaneously inspiring fear. Similarly, the cinematography and mise-en-scène of K-pop music videos and live performances present idols as divine, angelic figures surrounded by radiant halos.
Against a dystopian backdrop, however, these figures appear either as the source of “the Fall” or as “the Chosen Ones” destined to take over the existing world order. Recognising how K-pop fans ambivalently project both desire and anxiety onto idols, Kim created the painting-like installation Enrapture, featuring himself as a sacred idol amid the apocalypse.
The artist eternalises the ending fairy pose by framing himself within a delicate wooden structure and employing lenticular printing to evoke the stained-glass windows of religious spaces. The work encapsulates a desire-driven climactic moment within a religiously inspired K-pop performance. The audience also encounters LOOK, a technological, futuristic angel machine that gazes back at them. Confronted by this unknown creature, viewers are bathed in the divine glow of an LED ring light and see themselves transformed through an iPhone filter into an ending fairy. They find themselves becoming their own object of desire, experiencing an overwhelming degree of satisfaction while simultaneously confronting their deepest fear.
