Dear Fear approaches fear through power, psychoanalysis, the body, literature, and art, examining how fear is produced and how it acts upon the body and mind. Rather than treating fear as an emotion contained within the individual, the project considers it as something that emerges and circulates through relationships, at times becoming a means of controlling another person’s body and actions.

Drawing on his own experiences and research into masochism, Kim focuses on the ways fear and pain can be transformed into pleasure and play. Within masochism, pain and fear become sensations that can be deliberately chosen and received rather than simply avoided, while the positions of controlling and being controlled cease to remain fixed. The work extends these questions into the objectification of the body, considering the distance that emerges between the body treated as an object and the subject that recognises it as its own.

In Dear Fear, the body does not remain entirely bound to a single subject but moves between the positions of object and subject, continually entering different states. Fear and power likewise become something that can shift and be redistributed through relationships rather than permanently belong to one person. Through these transformations, Kim explores how relations between control, pleasure, fear, and the body might be rearranged.
