DEEPSPACE PAROUSIA

DEEPSPACE PAROUSIA extends Dew Kim’s 2020–2022 project DEEPSPACE EXODUS. Building on works first presented in his 2020 solo exhibition Dear Fear, the project dismantles and recomposes the relationship between the body and the psyche, experimenting with another order of sensation. What began as an engagement with fear through the languages of power, the body, and pleasure now expands into a queer terrain where restraint and release, control and submission, continually intersect.

The exhibition centres on the training and redistribution of bodily sensation. In Kim’s video work, the body enters conditions in which control and pleasure converge. Within these constraints, sensation becomes sharpened and reorganised. Through bondage, the body awakens to new sensitivities, redrawing the thresholds of pain along unfamiliar coordinates. Desire disciplines and liberates itself simultaneously, while the body internalises this process as a form of performative breath.

Kim’s sculptural works embody the affects of fragmentation, compression, fissure, and recomposition. Surfaces where sharpness and smoothness, solidity and fluidity coexist operate as boundaries through which material and sensation infiltrate one another. Rather than resolving into fixed forms, the sculptures remain in a state of active variation, becoming sites where fragments, traces, and vibrations intersect. In these moments, sensation condenses into matter, and matter dissolves back into sensation.

A performative sculpture made of latex constructs its own form through the intake and release of air. Its repeated contraction and expansion reveal movements of suppression, breath, tension, and release. The work presents a ritualised moment in which the body, transformed into an object, relinquishes power while simultaneously recovering energy. Its black surface absorbs and reflects the forces circulating through the space, activating a sensory field in which domination and submission, control and freedom, continually overlap.

Across DEEPSPACE PAROUSIA, sensation returns as an animating force. The sealed and fragmented body begins to breathe again, crossing the boundaries between pain and pleasure, constraint and release. Through destruction and disassembly, the body becomes a mediator of sensation, while power and desire move across and reorganise the coordinates of space and time. From within the debris, sensation resurges, and through this queer recurrence, the body generates another form of spacetime.

《DEEPSPACE PAROUSIA》는 듀킴이 2020년부터 2022년까지 진행한 프로젝트 《DEEPSPACE EXODUS》에서 확장된 작업이다. 2020년 개인전 《친애하는 공포에게》에서 처음 선보인 작업들을 바탕으로, 신체와 정신의 관계를 해체하고 재구성하며 또 다른 감각의 질서를 실험한다. 권력과 신체, 쾌락의 언어를 통해 공포를 다루었던 작업은 이제 구속과 해방, 통제와 복종이 끊임없이 교차하는 퀴어한 영역으로 확장된다.

전시는 신체 감각의 훈련과 재분배에 주목한다. 듀킴의 영상 작업에서 신체는 통제와 쾌락이 교차하는 조건 속으로 진입한다. 이러한 제약 안에서 감각은 더욱 예민해지고 새롭게 조직된다. 구속된 신체는 낯선 감각에 눈뜨며 고통의 한계를 익숙하지 않은 좌표 위에 다시 그린다. 욕망은 스스로를 규율하는 동시에 해방하고, 신체는 이 과정을 수행적인 호흡의 형태로 내면화한다.

듀킴의 조각 작업은 파편화와 압축, 균열과 재구성의 정동을 물질적으로 구현한다. 날카로움과 매끄러움, 단단함과 유동성이 공존하는 표면은 물질과 감각이 서로에게 침투하는 경계로 작동한다. 조각은 고정된 형태로 완결되지 않고 능동적으로 변화하는 상태에 머물며 파편과 흔적, 진동이 교차하는 장소가 된다. 이 순간 감각은 물질로 응축되고, 물질은 다시 감각 속으로 해체된다.

라텍스로 이루어진 수행적 조각은 공기를 흡입하고 배출하며 스스로의 형태를 만들어낸다. 반복되는 수축과 팽창은 억압과 호흡, 긴장과 이완의 움직임을 드러낸다. 작품은 사물로 변형된 신체가 힘을 내어주는 동시에 에너지를 되찾는 의례적 순간을 보여준다. 검은 표면은 공간을 순환하는 힘을 흡수하고 반사하며 지배와 복종, 통제와 자유가 계속해서 겹쳐지는 감각의 장을 활성화한다.

《DEEPSPACE PAROUSIA》 전반에서 감각은 신체를 움직이는 힘으로 되돌아온다. 봉인되고 파편화된 신체는 다시 호흡하기 시작하며 고통과 쾌락, 구속과 해방의 경계를 가로지른다. 파괴와 해체를 통과한 신체는 감각의 매개체가 되고, 권력과 욕망은 공간과 시간의 좌표를 이동하며 새롭게 배열한다. 잔해 속에서 감각은 다시 솟아오르고, 이러한 퀴어한 회귀를 통해 신체는 또 다른 형태의 시공간을 생성한다.
