Performance
Dew Kim approaches the increasingly fluid and expansive boundaries of queerness and gender through the lens of shamanism. The Old and Wrong Way of Seeing Things appropriates the term “black faith,” once used in the West to disparage the magical and religious practices of North Asia. Kim understands binary structures such as good and evil, heaven and hell, cause and effect, and subject and object as systems of separation rooted in religion. From this perspective, the project considers the persecution of homosexuality shaped by Western religious doctrine alongside the ritual practices and social roles of Korean shamanism. Focusing on the embodied and performative qualities of shamanic rituals, Kim reconfigures possibilities of the body spanning queerness, gender, the transhuman, and the posthuman through the visual language of K-pop.
듀킴은 끊임없이 세분화되고 확장되는 퀴어와 젠더의 유동적인 경계를 샤머니즘의 관점에서 탐구한다. 〈사물을 보는 낡고 잘못된 방식〉은 과거 서구 사회가 북아시아의 주술적이고 종교적인 실천을 폄훼하며 사용했던 ‘흑신앙(black faith)’이라는 표현을 전유한 프로젝트다. 듀킴은 선과 악, 천국과 지옥, 원인과 결과, 주체와 대상 같은 이분법적 구조를 종교에서 파생된 분리의 체계로 바라본다. 이를 바탕으로 서구 종교의 관점에서 이루어진 동성애 박해와 한국 무속신앙의 주술적 수행 및 사회적 역할을 함께 살핀다. 샤머니즘 의식에서 두드러지는 신체적이고 수행적인 요소에 주목하며, 퀴어와 젠더에서 트랜스휴먼과 포스트휴먼으로 이어지는 몸의 가능성을 K-pop의 시각 언어로 재구성한다.
