The origins of When the Water Blushed lie in Dew Kim’s MA dissertation, DIONYSIA: The True Story of My Relationship with My Body, which examined sadomasochism by bringing personal experience into dialogue with psychology, religion, and contemporary art. Kim subsequently reworked this material into an autobiographical narrative, published it, and used the publication as the basis for a pop-up exhibition.

〈물이 붉어졌을 때〉는 듀킴의 석사학위 논문 「디오니시아: 내 몸과 맺어온 관계에 관한 진실한 이야기」에서 출발한다. 이 논문은 작가의 개인적 경험을 심리학, 종교, 동시대미술과 연결하며 사도마조히즘을 탐구한 연구다. 이후 듀킴은 이 내용을 자전적 서사로 다시 구성해 출판하고, 해당 출판물을 바탕으로 팝업 전시를 선보였다.
