Popularised by second-wave feminism in the late 1960s, the phrase “the personal is political” underscores the connections between personal experience and broader political structures. In his new freestanding and wall-mounted sculptural installations, Dew Kim psychoanalyses his recent painful heartbreak and illuminates how intimacy and romance can operate as microcosms of societal violence. Through his signature sharp-witted, BDSM-inspired aesthetic, he visualises the emotional masochism he experienced.

In † Brutal Balloon † (2024) and † Cruel Cuddle † (2024), stainless-steel and aluminium crosses metamorphose into monstrous creatures with phallic tentacles that contort and suffocate purple and warm taupe glass bubbles, while writhing and sensing their surroundings in search of their next target. Although the tortured glass may initially appear to be a victim, it is not as innocent or sympathetic as the viewer might presume. Glassblowing has traditionally been a male-dominated field, as it demands considerable physical strength and technical skill, qualities often associated with male labour. This gendered perspective also reminds the artist of the suffering caused by toxic masculinity during his recent breakup. To overturn these forms of subjugation, Kim plots an artistic revenge using his expertise in metalsmithing and jewellery. He creates malleable stainless-steel feelers that symbolically crucify and banish the glass bubbles, which function as signifiers of patriarchal oppression.

The wall piece † Divine Descent † (2024) explores the liberatory potential of crucifixion, the ancient form of execution in which a person was nailed or bound to a cross. Composed of three elements, the work features a small silver cross strained between two neo-medieval nipple clamps made of chrome-plated brass and stainless steel, alongside a protruding phallus-like glass form. Presenting the work as an unorthodox torture device, Kim playfully investigates the power of the powerless by drawing on a pivotal event in Christian theology: the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

By giving Jesus the infamous kiss, Judas betrayed Christ and exposed him to the armed crowd sent by the chief priests and elders. Despite being remembered as one of the most notorious traitors in human history, Judas provided the final impetus for Christ’s crucifixion, without which the prophecy could not have been fulfilled. In other words, one must sometimes engineer one’s own victimhood and seemingly submit to the malicious intentions of others to achieve ultimately benevolent ends. By willingly accepting his fate and the psychological torment inflicted by his former lover, Kim imagines himself reborn through a divine descent, responding to extreme violence with kindness and grace.
